Lund - Great tradition in education, science and innovation
Founded in 990, Lund is Scandinavia’s largest centre for education and research, thanks to Lund University and Ideon Science Park with its many young and innovative companies. It is the home to several major international companies and one of the country’s largest university hospitals, offering first-class international standard care and research.
Substantial investments have been made in core activities within health care, education, child care and care for the elderly. Lund has been named as Sweden’s best school municipality several times, and recently it was also named the best residential municipality. There are about 111,600 people living in the municipality.
In Lund there is a spirit of learning more, achieving more, and making the future even brighter. We therefore call Lund the City of Ideas. This spirit has also resulted in a vast number of inventions over the years. Did you know that the turbo haler, the dialyser, the mobile phone, the use of ultrasound in medicine, the Tetra Pak milk carton, the ink-jet printer, the barospirator (the first machine for artificial respiration), the fingerprint reader and many other inventions all orignally came from Lund?
Internationally well-known companies include Tetra Pak, Alfa Laval, Sony Mobile, ST-Ericsson and Gambro.
Lund has a long tradition of ground-breaking research and entrepreneurial spirit, giving rise to many innovative new companies – several of which are now established world leaders in their respective fields. This thousand-year-old centre of learning boasts a highly favourable business climate.
Over the years, a great many knowledge-based companies have developed with the help of Lund University and Ideon Science Park. Lund has positioned itself as a leading international centre for innovative research and industry. Currently two top research facilities are being built within the municipality, ESS and MAX IV, which will attract many new businesses and people to the region.
